Bank of England Expected to Keep Rates Steady Amid Rising Oil Prices
On July 27, economists predict that the Bank of England will maintain interest rates at their current level during this week's meeting, despite renewed conflicts in the Middle East and soaring energy prices. Since the June Monetary Policy Committee meeting, the breakdown of the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran has led to a rebound in global oil prices, nearing $100 per barrel, while European natural gas prices have also reached their highest levels since the onset of the conflict. If shipping routes in the Gulf region continue to be disrupted, oil prices may rise further. The UK economy performed better than expected at the onset of the conflict, with GDP growth of 0.7% over the three months leading up to May. Currently, there are almost no signs that the energy shock will trigger lasting price pressures, as the CPI has been below expectations for three consecutive months, dropping to 2.6% in June. Slowing wage growth and a decrease in food price inflation are also major factors contributing to the easing of inflationary pressures. Economists indicate that the Monetary Policy Committee will keep rates at 3.75% during Thursday's meeting while signaling that if energy prices rise significantly or if price shocks evolve into persistent issues, the committee will be prepared to tighten policy.
