Cryptocurrencies: This Venture Capital Giant Drops the Word from Its Name and Turns to AI
Crypto changes its name. Andreessen Horowitz announced on October 22 the renaming of a16z Crypto, now a16z Frontier, and the expansion of its investment scope. Artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, and advancements in biology are now included in the targeted areas. Chris Dixon presents this evolution as an extension of the strategy: investments in cryptocurrencies and support for their regulatory framework remain on the agenda.
Key Points
- a16z Crypto becomes a16z Frontier and opens its mandate to other emerging technologies.
- Chris Dixon confirms the continuation of investments in crypto and related activities.
- The fifth crypto fund announced a raise of $2.2 billion in May 2026.
- The announcement of the name change does not specify any new fundraising or capital allocation between sectors.
Why a16z Expands Its Fund Beyond Cryptocurrencies
For Chris Dixon, the boundary between crypto companies and tech companies is becoming less clear. Financial institutions and fintechs are now using blockchains to offer payments, investments, or settlement services.
In this view, technology is gradually taking a back seat. A company can integrate stablecoins without making crypto its primary identity. The fund therefore aims to select companies based on their activities, rather than classifying them solely according to the tools they use.
This reasoning extends the one presented during the launch of Crypto Fund 5 on May 5, 2026. Equipped with $2.2 billion, this vehicle already highlighted payments in stablecoins, blockchain financial markets, and transactions between artificial intelligence agents. The stated ambition was to transform the infrastructures developed during previous cycles into products used in everyday life.
The name change provides more latitude for this strategy. However, it does not constitute the announcement of new funding of $2.2 billion: this amount corresponds to the raise presented in the spring.
AI, Autonomous Machines, and Biology in the New Scope
With Frontier, a16z wants to finance companies that develop technologies and markets that may take several years to emerge. The mentioned scope includes autonomous machines capable of interacting with the physical world, as well as advancements in biology and medicine.
Crypto retains a function in this vision: enabling new networks to exchange value. Software agents could thus purchase data, computing, or services, and then automatically settle with their providers.
This perspective was already present in the presentation of Crypto Fund 5. The authors described programs capable of acting for their users and acquiring the necessary resources for their tasks. It is an investment thesis, the commercial development of which depends on actual usage.
Chris Dixon leads the fund with Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin, and Guy Wuollet. The operational teams continue to support portfolio companies, particularly on regulatory, technical, and commercial issues.
The new mandate thus opens competition for capital to more sectors. Crypto remains a claimed conviction, but it now shares the spotlight with other technologies that a16z seeks to finance the initial markets for.
