Ripple Executive Warns That Filtering Against Fraud Could Undermine Freedom of Expression
The lawsuit filed by the state of Rhode Island against Meta Platforms has reignited the debate over the extent to which technology platforms should be held accountable for fraudsters. Ripple's Emeritus CTO David Schwartz expressed his opposition to the complete filtering of all content through algorithms. Schwartz argued that excessive filtering efforts could harm freedom of expression and that the attempt to render fraudulent content completely invisible could weaken the internet community's collective defense capacity. He stated that he advocates for a tougher yet practical approach to cybersecurity. Experts emphasize that completely isolating unwanted content makes it difficult to detect new threats early. Schwartz, known for publicly announcing phishing attempts by detecting them directly, noted that relying solely on automated systems may not be sufficient in the fight against fraud. Additionally, he criticized the responsibility imposed on technology companies by public authorities, stating that it is not right to direct blame at platforms instead of the actual perpetrators. Web3 developers argue that under current conditions, the most effective protection is not full automated filtering but rather transparency and community vigilance.
