Trump announced that he will place the Washington, D.C. Police Department under federal control and deploy the National Guard to the district.
BlockBeats News, August 11th, President Trump of the United States stated on Monday that he will put the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and has ordered the National Guard to be deployed to the capital to combat what he described as a wave of "lawlessness."
Trump told reporters at the White House press conference: "I am deploying the National Guard to help restore law and order and public safety in Washington D.C. Our nation's capital has been taken over by violent mobs and bloodthirsty criminals." This move is Trump's latest exercise of executive power to intervene in matters traditionally under local jurisdiction, targeting Democratic-run cities. However, he denied that he is "manufacturing a crisis" to expand presidential authority.
Trump stated that the high crime rate in Washington D.C. is affecting the functioning of the federal government. While acknowledging that other cities are also in bad shape, Washington D.C. will be the starting point. It is reported that Trump has formally declared a public safety emergency in Washington D.C. and has stated that if necessary, the military will be deployed. (Forex Live)
