Pantera Partner Claims Computing Power Market Mirrors Financialization Path of Electricity Market
Pantera Capital partner Jay Yu pointed out that the computing power market is evolving along the financialization path of the electricity market from thirty years ago, transitioning from early reliance on group chats, over-the-counter brokers, and bilateral agreements to standardized pricing, indexing, and tradable commodity assets. The article draws an analogy between the electricity market's "grid operator-node" structure and the computing power market's "hardware manufacturer-cluster" structure, noting that the industry has seen the emergence of physical delivery (such as SF Compute, Runpod, Compute Exchange), computing power indices (such as Ornn, Silicon Data), derivatives exchanges (such as Liquid Compute, Architect), and multi-layered financial products like lending and synthetic stablecoins. Nvidia's monopoly position in the GPU technology stack allows it to play the role of the "central bank" in the computing power market, influencing hardware depreciation rates by controlling the pace of new product releases and promising to provide up to 25% residual value support for cloud service providers, acting as the "lender of last resort."
