SEC Urges Financial Industry to Strengthen Valuation of Private Assets
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a statement urging the financial industry to enhance the valuation of illiquid private assets. With a surge in investor redemption requests, the agency emphasized the need for firms to focus on determining the value of their holdings and disclosing related risks. The SEC's Office of the Chief Accountant and the Division of Investment Management pointed out in a joint statement that robust policies and procedures, along with adequate disclosures, help investors understand the fair value assessment process and the risks associated with private assets. Although the statement did not propose new rules, it is seen as a "key reminder" to the industry.
